dance in South Florida
Dear Jennifer,
Dancing with your feet is one thing; but dancing with your heart is another.

Dance Broward is a new nonprofit organization formed in Broward County to enable and empower the positive use of dance in the community.  We aim to connect dancers with their community, and to connect the community to dance, through the use of dance as a tool in four different contexts.

©As an educational tool...teach the public about dance; use dance as a teaching tool for young children; use dance as a catalyst to develop critical skills in student dancers; educate dancers on diverse dance styles.

©As a charitable tool...perform, participate and create events to raise funds, awareness and lend support to charitable organizations.

©As a cultural tool...use the many genres of dance to enhance our community's multi-cultural atmosphere and increase exposure to the arts for all people regardless of age or socioeconomic status.

©As a social tool...bring people of diverse cultures and backgrounds together to experience a sense of unity and community belonging.

Dancers Against Domestic Violence
Dance together. Dance for a cause. Dance Broward.

October is domestic violence awareness month; this year dancers from throughout the community joined together to help support Women in Distress in their fight against domestic violence. On October 6, Team Dance Broward walked at the 5K SAFEWALK and raised over $1,300 in donations for Women in Distress. Jubilee Dance Theatre (JDT) was among members and did an outstanding job with their donations.

On October 11, dancers from the community joined with Dance Broward to perform at Women in Distress' first annual Performing Arts Night to raise awareness for domestic violence. Dance Academy of North Lauderdale, MJM Dance, and the Sharkettes (NSU dance team) were among the participants, as well as singer Jordana Forrest.

Thank you to everyone who participated in making this community a safer place to live.

Jubilee Dance Theatre JUBILEE DANCE THEATRE

What do you get when you combine an award-winning director, multicultural cast, and artistic expression at its best?  You get Jubilee Dance Theatre, a local professional dance company bursting with South Florida flavor.

Jubilee Dance Theatre (JDT) was founded in April of 2002 and incorporated in February 2003, under the direction of Luctricia "Lu" Welters and the assistant artistic direction of Claudine Carter-Pereira. Both women are accomplished dancers with an  impressive artistic background who came together to create JDT after realizing the need in South Florida for professional dance.

JDT employs a large cast of company members and young apprentices, all with diverse ethnic backgrounds and dance experience to encourage and educate its audience through entertainment by use of a variety of dance styles, including Ballet, Modern, Jazz and Hip-hop.  JDT demonstrates its commitment to "give its gifts back to the community" through remarkable performances at both a local and international level.  Through their task to make the arts accessible to all individuals, they provide dance classes to children and adults at a remarkably low cost, and have worked with the Broward School Board to provide "Science through Dance."

In 2005, JDT hosted its first "Diversity in the Mix", a 3-Day festival held biennially that showcases a variety of dance disciplines and a universal community of choreographers.  Their most recent festival featured not only the disciplines of Ballet, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Modern, Tap, but also included African, Capoeira, Flamenco, Mambo, Middle Eastern, Pilates, and Salsa.

In its five years, JDT has certainly made its mark in the community.  In October 2004, JDT was presented with the unveiling of the "Alvin Ailey" American Choreographers-37 cent commemorative postage stamp by the Ft. Lauderdale Postmaster General.  Ms. Welters is the recipient of the 2007 JM Family Enterprises, African-American Achievers Award and received the 2006 Arts Recognition Award from the Florida Department of State Division of Cultural Affairs. Mrs. Pereira was nominated and selected for inclusion in the 26th Edition of Who's Who of American Women 2007.

Even with its long list of accomplishments, JDT keeps its ambitious spirit in hopes of one day becoming a touring company and creating a performing arts center to house not just dance but multiple artistic disciplines.  In the meantime, JDT will continue to build and strengthen the culture of South Florida; setting a new standard for dance.

Students Serve Their Community Through Dance
Teens who love to dance will now have the opportunity to earn their required service hours through Dance Broward events and activities.  Teens may participate on an individual basis or through their studio's membership.

 How can I volunteer?

Since our events vary from one organization to another, times and requirements are flexible.  Sign up as a volunteer and you will be contacted with opportunities as they arise.  You may obtain a form and more information at our website under volunteer opportunities.

What about the Community Expressions program? This unique program will begin in May, 2008, and will allow teen dancers to dance in the community on a regular, volunteer basis. This program will also encompass many other personal skill-building activities such as responsibility, professional development, leadership, and more. This program is something you don't want to miss!
